I have been in an IIM for two months now and based on my short experience i would like to suggest few key points one needs to keep in mind before going for an MBA.
Now that the CAT forms are out an MBA aspirant must need to consider few things before deciding anything. The first thing you need to do before going for an MBA is to decide why you want to go for an MBA?? Based on my experience I have found out three reasons for it:
1. You are tired of your job and you need a change.
2. You want to change your work profile, which is basically an excuse for your greed for more money.
3. You are not sure about doing anything and since everyone is doing an MBA you should also do it.
I belonged to the first class of people two months back. My suggestions for them are:
a. If you think that you would enjoy MBA you might be wrong, its much tougher than a regular job and at times more boring than it. Try enjoying your job first, when you are able to do that you are good for an MBA.
b. If you are contemplating about quitting your job, analyze your options thoroughly, think about every situation in a clear and unbiased way.
c. If you do not have a good profile and i mean a good profile compared to a top b-school student, better do not quit your job and try to build your profile in a way that would help you in b-school, talk to as many MBA students you know before quitting.
For the second category of MBA aspirants, I have the following suggestions:
a. An MBA college is the best place to get a profile change, but be ready to face the rigor. Trust me you would not have any freaking idea what is going to hit you.
b. If you join an MBA school to get a better job, your life is going to be very tough for the next two years. You would need to be completely focused on your goals. The competition is tough for anyone and everyone, it does not matter what you have achieved in your life so far . So better weigh your options carefully,I mean if you would have some other liabilities for the next two years, you will need to manage them and that would be very challenging for you.
c. I have seen a tendency in people to choose an easy path and give up. They tend to lose focus and are ready for a job which suits their past profile, which is easy for them to get. If you do this you are defying your initial purpose. So be ready to execute your plans. If you are not good at focusing and achieving long-term goals, better start working on them.
Now for the last category of aspirants, a large part of which is formed by the freshers or guys with no experience.
a. Your career is no joke so better analyze your interests and likings first. There are other things also which will pay you as much as an MBA degree and in some cases more than it.
b. If you are an engineer, be ready for a different life altogether. A b-school life is really different and much tougher compared to an engineering college life.
c. Its better in many cases to get an industry exposure first, but keep in mind you do not lose your different way of thinking. Its a thing which you would find very rare in b-school after you join it.
Now a general suggestion for any b-school aspirant, guys a top b-school is the best place for self-improvement , so always keep in mind that you are for your improvement there and everything will automatically fit in place. Mind you its a very difficult thing to do.
ATB to all for their preparations.
Atleast I am not in ur all 3 category......thank god........good suggestion to all the aspirants of CAT2010
ReplyDeletehi,
ReplyDeletethanks for this useful post..
i really want to know ur preperation plan for the CAT?
sir firstly thanx for useful post.
ReplyDeletebeing from ur home state i want some useful suggestions on lr di part.
To add to the above:
ReplyDelete1. The more no. of work experience you add before getting into MBA, the harder it is to change your profile and becomes impossible after a level( mind that level is not that high .....but i wouldn't quantify it)
2. If you want to change your profile, better start working towards it before getting into a b-school( mere interest isn't going to help you), believe me nothing is going to be served on platter for you to get a change in your profile and that may also help you to get through PIs
3. "Grass is not always greener on the other side" and for b-schools "Grass are rarely greener on the other side"
Actually it's not the fault of CAT or B-school but rather some changes need to be made in education system:
1. Remove the so hyped placements from B-school. Let it be education temple and not a Job-brothel
2. Either, make UG education system tougher or make the PG-MBA a little matching to the UG
ATB to CAT takers
@ ravi U r deviating from the point bro we can have a long discussion on the education system but this is not the rite place for it, and thanx a lot for adding these valuable suggestions
ReplyDeleteNice elaborative take on y MBA...
ReplyDeleteYes it's so very important to know why MBA before taking the plunge...
I have some different take on the point of quitting JOB...
As sidhant said that, it's so very important to analyze situation before quiting the job. There is one more aspect to those who utterly frustrated and things there is no way out of the frustration than MBA... It's a wrong way to think but the person in that situation can't think beyond as his state of mind didn't allow him to think beyond the horizon... Since I have been through that phase n i quit my job n remain jobless for almost n didn't made it to any good coll.. but in that phase I got the time to think for myself and without bothering too much how n what others is doing... What happened to me in that phase I sorted out my priorities n now I m in a job n quit happy with myself n taking small step towards what I want.. The point I am trying to make is that it is very important to take time out of that fast life which does not allow you to think for yourself... At the end of the day my decision to quit my job is paying me very well...
I am not romanticizing the option of quiting job that few entrepreneurial stories tend to do... But I would suggest buy time for urself either by quiting your fast life or taking a break but do apply breaks on thelife which is fast slipping out of your hand to get the control back..
ATB to all who are aspiring and good to all who are in the process of a decision...
to add:
ReplyDelete1.First of all you should shed all your dreams of securing a job that pays in millions just because you cracked CAT, the reality is that you might land up with a job with a salary equivalent to what you were earning before or sometimes less than tht.
2. If your past acads are screwed up... seriously give a second thought prior joining a B school. Spice up your profile first because as you enter B School you realize that its all about marketing and to market yourself you need something and believe me once you enter you ll find many with that extra edge which will make your life hell here.
3. If your company has a system of giving sabbatical go for it.
4. Tame your ego, you are the king when you crack CAT but that would not remain the same when you enter and feel the punches of the B School rigour.
5. For mathematics lover :
Life in engineering just day before exams= each day in B School
No. of frnds in Engineering coll= no. of competitors in B SChool
No. of frnds in B School= Null Set
No. of moments when you ll regret joining a B School= infinity, u ll regret each n every moment
Power sector offers awesome opportunities for young, ambitious engineers. Why MBA, when you can build an effin power plant at a site. Talk about self-improvement and life lessons, a construction site is where people learn what is right for them and what is not.
ReplyDeleteHey bro it's a very good study of why most of the people (atleast like me n u n us) wants to go to B-school
ReplyDeleteThe biggest problem is we all are doing engineering and/then mba only because it feeds us or it is the easiest way to get a job and end up in a boring life....the only way to enjoy ur job is to go for a job of ur interest...B-school is not just an alternative...
all the jobs r repetative and boring....try to enjoy ur work by doing sth new because nothing is perfect n there is always a chance of improvement n thats why we engineers are.....
as an engineer u always hav a big platform to think and change whereas in B-school only u hav to change....
be careful in taking big steps of life
insightful! expecting more on this
ReplyDeleteThe last para of your post sums it all. Its about having realistic expectation.
